The words New York uses for its own record, and the two that are routinely mistaken for each other.
The two ids
- BBL - Borough, Block and Lot: the tax lot. Ten digits, the first being the borough. Money and zoning are BBL facts.
- BIN - Building Identification Number: one building. A lot can carry several, and violations are filed here rather than on the lot.
Places
- NTA - Neighborhood Tabulation Area, the city's own unit for a neighbourhood, and the name it files them under.
- Community board - the district that reviews land use locally. Fifty-nine of them.
- Borough - one of five counties. The first digit of every BBL.
Paperwork
- CO - certificate of occupancy: what a building is lawfully allowed to be used as.
- NB - a new building application. DM - demolition.
- A1 - an alteration changing use, egress or occupancy. A2 and A3 are smaller alterations.
- PLUTO - Primary Land Use Tax Lot Output, the City Planning file that carries the roll.
Violation classes
Housing violations are graded A non-hazardous, B hazardous, C immediately hazardous, and I immediately hazardous for heat or hot water. Department of Buildings violations are not graded this way at all and carry their own type codes instead.
