Why the District asks which quadrant

1st Street exists four times over. The quadrant is not decoration on a Washington address, it is part of it, and a report cannot be run without one.

Washington is laid out as four quadrants around the Capitol, and every street address carries the one it sits in. It is part of the address in the same way the street name is.

How often it actually matters

Constantly. Checked against the District's own address register:

1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW and 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue SE are both real and both in the register, one in Ward 2 and the other in Ward 6. Neither is a typo for the other, and a report about one is not a report about the other.

What this product does about it

It asks. An address typed without a quadrant is answered with a question naming the quadrants that actually hold that number and street, rather than a report about whichever one the register returned first. A confident report about the wrong building is worse than a question.

The register holds 144,422 address points. Counts run 15 September 2026.
